Traditional Moussaka



Moussaka is a layered dish of eggplant, ground meat, tomato sauce, and béchamel sauce. It is a popular dish in Greece and is often served as a main course. The eggplant is thinly sliced and then baked until soft. The ground meat is cooked with onions, garlic, and tomatoes. The béchamel sauce is made with milk, butter, flour, and cheese. Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggplants, sliced into ½-inch thick rounds
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 pound ground lamb
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can tomato soup
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 375° degrees F (190° degrees C).

  2. Brush eggplant slices with olive oil and place on a baking sheet.

  3. Bake in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until softened.

  4. In a large skillet, brown the ground lamb over medium heat.

  5. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened.

  6. Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato soup, oregano, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

  7. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.

  8. To assemble the moussaka, spread half of the tomato sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  9. Top with half of the eggplant slices.

  10. Sprinkle with half of the Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs.

  11. Repeat layers.

  12. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
