Biftekia Greek Burgers

Biftekia is a traditional dish that’s often described as a cross between burger patties and slightly flattened meatballs. The patties are made with a combination of ground pork, beef, or lamb, and the meat is mixed with onions, breadcrumbs, eggs, and aromatic herbs such as mint and oregano.

Biftekia are typically accompanied by fries, red onions, or cooked vegetables. The dish is especially popular during summer as a barbecue staple.

Serves: 4  |  Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 1 red onion, grated
  • 1 lbs pork mince, you can also use chicken, beef or lamb if you like
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs, traditional or panko
  • 1 tablespoon oregano, dried
  • 1 teaspoon dill, dried
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons parsley, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Black pepper to taste

Steps:

  1. Preheat a fan forced oven to 355°F. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Set aside.

  2. Grate your red onion into a large mixing bowl. Add the remaining ingredients. Mix using your hands or a wooden spoon until well combined.

  3. Roll out balls about 2 tablespoons each and roll into balls. Chilling the mince in the fridge for an hour before rolling makes them easier to roll.

  4. Space out evenly on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes. Once baked serve with tzatziki, Greek salad and some pita bread!
